Afi River Forest Reserve, Protected forest reserve in Cross River State, Nigeria
Afi River Forest Reserve is a protected lowland rainforest in Boki that features mountainous terrain interlaced with flowing rivers and streams. The landscape presents a complex mix of vegetation types adapted to the varied topography and water systems.
The reserve received protection status as a significant bird conservation area, linking two major forest blocks in the region into one ecological corridor. This designation connected previously isolated natural areas.
Local farming families have long relied on forest resources for their livelihoods, tending crops and gathering materials in areas that remain integrated with the reserve's ecosystem. This coexistence between people and forest shapes how the landscape is used and cared for.
Visiting requires good physical fitness due to hilly terrain and forest paths, with consistently high humidity throughout the year. The drier months offer easier trekking and better chances to observe wildlife.
The forest shelters forest elephants and a chimpanzee species found nowhere else in the world except this corner of Africa and Cameroon. These large animals coexist with rare short-legged crocodiles in this relatively small protected area.
