Kang Yung Study Hall

Kang Yung Study Hall, Historic study hall in North District, Hong Kong

Kang Yung Study Hall is a historic educational facility in the Hakka village of Sheung Wo Hang with grey brick walls and a rectangular footprint. The building contains two main halls and raised storage spaces tucked under the roof.

The Li family built this educational institution during the early Qing dynasty and carried out major expansions during the Qianlong reign. These enlargements made it one of the region's most important learning centers.

This location served as a vital learning hub for the local Hakka community, reflecting how much this group valued education and scholarship. The spaces inside show how generations of students gathered here to study classical texts together.

Visitors can access the hall from Monday through Sunday except on Tuesdays, with time slots in both the morning and afternoon. Plan your visit in advance and check current opening hours to make the most of your time there.

The building was constructed using unfired mud-bricks and rammed earth, showing traditional Chinese building techniques from that era. These materials are rarely preserved and offer a rare glimpse into how people built structures long ago.
