Yanqi Lake, reservoir in Huairou, Beijing
Yanqi Lake is a large reservoir in the north of Huaibei, roughly 50 kilometers from Beijing. The water is calm and reflects the sky, while more than 10 peaks surrounding the lake create a natural backdrop of water and hills.
The lake has long been a natural feature of the landscape and was integrated into Beijing's tourism development in the late 1980s. Since then, the area has grown into a popular destination for visitors seeking nature and outdoor recreation.
The lake takes its name from wild geese that arrive each spring and autumn, bringing life to the landscape during these seasons. For local people, it serves as a retreat from city life, and the evening ritual of sitting by the water to watch the sky change colors remains part of daily habits.
The lake lies about 50 kilometers from Beijing's center and is easily reached by car via expressways, with paid parking available. Buses and tour shuttles also run to the area, and it is wise to check opening hours in advance since some sections like Yanqi Island may close temporarily.
Yanqi Island hosted world leaders during the APEC meeting and now contains small villas and a hotel surrounded by pines, ginkgos, and flowering cherries. The 14 kilometer lakeside trail runs along the water and transforms into a colorful cherry blossom route in spring, beloved by photographers.
