Chinese Aviation Museum, Aviation and military museum in Datangshan, China
The Chinese Aviation Museum sits at the foot of Datangshan Mountain and displays over 300 aircraft along with approximately 15,300 pieces of military equipment from different eras. The sprawling exhibition gives visitors a comprehensive overview of military aviation development through numerous halls and outdoor sections.
The museum opened on November 11, 1989, coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force. It has since grown into one of the largest aviation collections in Asia.
The collection spans aircraft from China, Russia, the United States, Japan, Britain, France, and Canada, showing how different nations developed aviation technology. Walking through the halls, visitors encounter machines that represent decades of international aeronautical progress.
The museum is open year-round, with free entry to main galleries, though certain sections like the cave exhibition area require separate tickets. Comfortable shoes are essential since the grounds are expansive and require substantial walking.
The museum houses a modified aircraft hangar from the 1970s spanning over 20,000 square meters, where representative aircraft from different Chinese periods are displayed together. This single structure showcases rare specimens of Chinese aviation history in one space.

Aerospace museums hold airplanes that have marked the history of flight, often displayed in large hangars or outside. You can see military aircraft used during world conflicts, commercial planes that carried the first passengers, as well as experimental prototypes and objects from the early days of flying. These collections tell the story of how flying has grown, from early attempts to space rockets. Important places include the national museum of the United States Air Force in Ohio, which shows hundreds of aircraft sorted by period, and the Royal Air Force Museum in London, which shares British aviation history. In Europe, the Museo del Aire in Madrid displays over 150 Spanish military planes, and the Caproni Museum in Trentino gathers dozens of Italian aircraft along with many technical documents. In Russia, the Central Museum of the Air Forces near Moscow keeps Soviet-era airplanes and engines. These museums help visitors understand how flying developed in each country and how it changed travel and moving around.
