Baiwangshan Forest Park, hill and park in Haidian, Beijing
Baiwangshan Forest Park is a forested hill in Xibeiwang, Beijing's Haidian District, covering more than 130 hectares with a diverse mix of old and tall trees throughout. Several trails lead to the summit where a pavilion offers views across the city, while stone monuments with calligraphy can be found along the walking paths.
The mountain gained its name during the Song Dynasty when a brave mother watched her son fighting from this location, an event that became part of local legend. A pavilion built in 1993 with a white marble tablet honors important historical figures, while a memorial hall preserves the memory of those who died for change.
The name comes from a Song Dynasty story about a mother who watched her son from this mountain during battle, making it a symbol of family courage and dedication. Stone monuments throughout the park display calligraphy from leaders and artists, showing how the place connects visitors to Chinese cultural traditions.
The smooth and gentle trails are suitable for visitors of all ages, from children to older people, as they are easy to walk on. The best time to visit is from May to October when the weather is warm and nature is most vibrant, with most visitors spending around two hours exploring the park.
The park holds over 1000 pieces of art created by Chinese leaders and famous artists, engraved on stone throughout the grounds and turning the place into an open-air gallery. In autumn, the leaves of smoke trees and torch trees glow particularly bright red at sunset, appearing like burning flames against the sky.
