Zhixi Yangtze River Bridge, Suspension bridge in Yichang, China
The Zhixi Yangtze River Bridge is a suspension structure crossing the Yangtze River with a total length of about 3,200 meters and a roadway width of 33.5 meters (110 feet). The main span between the towers stretches approximately 840 meters (2,750 feet) and carries four lanes of highway traffic.
Planning for this suspension bridge began in 1998, and construction took place over several phases. The structure was completed and opened in 2016 to provide a major crossing over the Yangtze.
The bridge links communities on both sides of the Yangtze River and enables daily movement of people and goods across the waterway. It has become part of the regional transport network that shapes how travelers and locals move through Hubei.
The bridge is part of the G50 expressway and located roughly 20 kilometers downstream from central Yichang. Access is via highway ramps on both sides, and the bridge itself is for vehicle traffic only.
The construction of this structure required substantial investment and presents an engineering solution for crossing one of China's largest rivers. The project demonstrates the technical challenges of building a major bridge in this geographical region.
