Wujiagang Yangtze River Bridge

Wujiagang Yangtze River Bridge, Suspension bridge in Yichang, China.

Wujiagang Yangtze River Bridge is a suspension bridge stretching 2813 meters across the river to connect two districts on opposite banks. The structure features six traffic lanes and was built without supports in the water, keeping the river channel open for navigation and natural flow.

Construction started in November 2016 and finished in August 2021, making it a modern infrastructure link for Yichang. Completion marked an important step in improving the city's road network and connecting the two sides of the river.

The bridge was designed to protect Chinese sturgeon, with the river kept free of support piers so these endangered fish can migrate naturally. When you cross or view this structure, you notice how the water flows unobstructed beneath it, a choice made to respect local wildlife.

The bridge is designed for vehicles traveling at 80 kilometers per hour, allowing for fairly quick crossing times. Since it serves as a major connector, traffic can be heavier during rush hours and it's worth planning your crossing accordingly.

The main span was engineered without river supports and stretches 1160 meters, a technical achievement created specifically to protect sturgeon. This bold design choice shows how modern infrastructure can work alongside environmental protection.
