Xiling Yangtze River Bridge, Suspension bridge in Yiling District, China
The Xiling Yangtze River Bridge is a road suspension bridge over the Yangtze in Yiling District, Yichang, Hubei. Its single 900 m main span hangs from cables between two white towers whose tops reach 187.5 m, 2.5 m higher than the Three Gorges Dam. The bridge is 1,118.66 m long and 21 m wide overall, with an 18 m deck: four traffic lanes and a 1.5 m walkway on each side.
Construction began in December 1993 and the bridge opened to traffic on 10 August 1996, built by the China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group. It won first prize for quality engineering from the Ministry of Railways in 1997 and the Luban Prize for Chinese construction in 1998.
The bridge serves as a daily connection between communities on both riverbanks, linking neighborhoods that were once separated by water. It has become a central part of how residents move between their homes, workplaces, and family members across the river.
The bridge handles regular traffic with lanes in both directions for vehicles of various sizes. Visitors can expect typical road congestion during peak hours, particularly in the morning and late afternoon.
The bridge's two white main towers reach 187.5 m at the top, 2.5 m higher than the Three Gorges Dam itself. It was the first suspension bridge built across the Yangtze, and in 1998 it received the Luban Prize, China's top construction award.
