Zieten-Kaserne, Military barracks in Göttingen, Germany
The Zieten-Kaserne is a former military facility in Göttingen with multiple buildings designed according to standardized plans from the 1930s. The site spreads across a large area and includes training grounds, supply facilities, and accommodation blocks for stationed personnel.
The complex was built starting in 1936 as a military installation and initially housed cavalry regiments. After 1945 it was used by British and American forces until its closure as a military base in 1993.
The barracks were named after an important Prussian cavalry officer from the 1700s, and this historical connection still appears in the street names around the area today. The naming reflects how military heritage shaped the identity of this neighborhood.
The site is now open to visitors and has been transformed into a residential and commercial district. The original buildings were partially preserved and renovated, making it possible to recognize the military past while walking through.
After military decommissioning, the entire site was redeveloped under the name Zieten-Terrassen into a new urban district. Many of the renovated historic buildings now contain apartments, shops and cafes, creating an interesting contrast between military architecture and modern city life.
