Templin, Spa town in Uckermark District, Germany
Templin is a spa town in Uckermark District in Brandenburg, surrounded by extensive forests and more than a dozen lakes. The town preserves a completely intact medieval wall circuit with three town gates and several defensive towers.
Margrave Waldemar granted town rights to the settlement in 1314, enabling it to grow rapidly as a trading post. Three years later Denmark, Mecklenburg and Pomerania signed the Treaty of Templin here, ending territorial disputes in the region.
The market square serves as a central meeting point for residents and visitors, with shops and cafés grouped around the historic town hall. On market days the square fills with stalls run by regional producers offering cheese, honey and baked goods from the surrounding area.
The town center lies close to several swimming lakes and thermal baths, all easily reachable on foot or by bicycle. Regional rail connections run directly from Berlin to the station, from where the center can be reached in a few minutes on foot.
Angela Merkel spent her childhood here from 1957 and returned several times later as Chancellor. The town awarded her honorary citizenship in 2019 and opened a hiking trail named after her.
