Erstes Deutsches Bananenmuseum, Banana museum in Sierksdorf, Germany
The German Banana Museum was a collection of roughly 10,500 objects related to bananas, including artworks, publications, and historical records about cultivation and trade. The displays showed how this fruit has shaped culture and commerce from multiple perspectives.
The museum was founded in 1991 by industrial designer Bernhard Stellmacher as a dedicated collection space. A fire damaged the building extensively in 2018, leading to the museum's closure.
The museum collection included an 18th-century banana engraving by Maria Sibylla Merian and Andy Warhol's banana artwork among its notable pieces.
The museum occupied a basement space in a private home and was accessible only at set weekend times. Advance notice was recommended due to limited hours and the small, personal nature of the venue.
One of the strangest features was a cash dispenser that ejected banknotes when visitors inserted real bananas. The museum also kept an enameled tie pin designed as the world's tiniest banana.
