Freibad Falkenwiese, Outdoor swimming pool at Wakenitzufer, Lübeck, Germany.
Freibad Falkenwiese is an outdoor pool along the Wakenitz River in Lübeck, stretching with changing facilities and swimming areas across a riverside setting. The site sits east of the historic old town and makes use of the river's natural surroundings.
The pool began in 1799 as Kreidemannsche Anstalt, founded by a society dedicated to charitable works. This makes it one of Northern Germany's oldest bathing facilities.
The name comes from Falkenwiese, a former willow meadow that once occupied this riverside location. Locals continue to gather here as they have for generations, making it a regular meeting place throughout the year.
Visitors can enter through the Wakenitzufer street entrance, and hot showers are available throughout the facility along with a floating platform. Plan your visit around the changing seasons, as opening hours shift depending on the time of year.
Citizens created a support group in 1999 to keep the facility running, which earned UNESCO Agenda 21 recognition by 2001. This grassroots effort saved the pool from closure and brought significant improvements to its infrastructure.
