Marktplatzbrunnen, Water well and cultural heritage monument in Market Square, Mannheim, Germany.
The Marktplatzbrunnen stands in the center of Mannheim's Market Square, featuring sculptures representing elements including a water god and Mercury holding the sun.
Peter van den Branden created the fountain in 1719 for Heidelberg Castle Garden, and his son Johann Matthäus redesigned it when moved to Mannheim in 1769.
The fountain's sculptures present different elements through classical figures: water depicted by a water deity, earth by a female form, and fire through Mercury.
The structure became a functional water fountain in 1888 with the introduction of Mannheim's central water supply system, connected to the new Water Tower.
The fountain endured multiple restorations after war damage, including a complete replacement of the Neckar figure and Mercury's head reconstruction following a 1958 incident.
