Metternicher Eule

The Metternicher Eule is a war monument on Kimmelberg hill in Koblenz-Metternich, featuring an eagle statue atop a square base. The structure rises about 9 meters and is built from dressed stone blocks with reinforced pillar supports.

The monument was inaugurated in 1913 to honor Prussian soldiers from Metternich who died in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Later, inscriptions were added to commemorate those lost in the World Wars.

Local residents call the monument 'The Owl' because of how the eagle perches, which is why the surrounding neighborhood became known as 'Eulenhorst' or Owl's Nest. This naming reflects how a visual impression shaped local identity and place names.

You reach the monument by climbing a wide staircase, where information panels at the site explain its history and meaning. The panels make it easy to understand the structure's importance to the community.

The eagle holds an Iron Cross with the letter W for Wilhelm I and the year 1870 at its feet. Local stonemason Wilhelm Geisen carved the entire monument from trachyte stone.
