The monument, inaugurated in October 1913, honors Prussian soldiers from Metternich who died during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, with later additions commemorating World War casualties.
Local residents refer to the monument as 'The Owl' due to the eagle's sitting posture, leading to the surrounding residential area being named 'Eulenhorst' or Owl's Nest.
Visitors can reach the monument via a 16-meter-wide staircase, where information panels detail the structure's history and significance to the community.
The monument features an Iron Cross with the letter W for Wilhelm I and the year 1870 at the eagle's feet, crafted from trachyte by local stonemason Wilhelm Geisen.
