Schattenmühle, building in Löffingen, Freiburg Government Region, Bade-Württemberg, Germany
The Schattenmühle is a watermill in the Wutach gorge near Löffingen that now operates as a restaurant, lodging, and cultural site. The building sits among trees and rocks by the river, offering meals, overnight rooms, and information about the region to visitors.
The first written record of the Schattenmühle dates to 1596, when a miller from Göschweiler worked there. Over the centuries, the mill was expanded to process grain, gypsum, and timber before eventually becoming a restaurant and lodging in recent times.
The name 'Schattenmühle' comes from the mill's shaded, secluded position deep in the gorge. The site serves as a reminder of how people once relied on water power for work, and visitors can sense this connection to the past when walking through the rustic buildings and surroundings.
The site is easily reached via popular hiking trails like the Schluchtensteig and Wutachschlucht route, with space for small or large groups. Daily buses serve the area during warmer months, and the nearby Löffingen train station helps visitors arrive without a car.
After a fire in 2007 destroyed the main building, the Schattenmühle was rebuilt within months and reopened on May 1, 2008. The old mill's turbine still generates electricity and works alongside modern solar panels on the barn roof.
