Schloss Schwöbber, Renaissance château in Aerzen, Germany
The stone château features symmetrical wings, decorative turrets, and stands surrounded by water, forming a traditional Wasserburg design in Lower Saxony.
Construction of the château began in 1573 under Hilmar von Münchhausen, a colonel serving Philip II of Spain, and remained with the Münchhausen family until 1919.
The château's gardens drew royal visitors in the 17th century, including Tsar Peter the Great who examined its plant collection in 1715.
The château now operates as the five-star Schlosshotel Münchhausen following extensive renovations completed in 2004 by Ursula and Friedrich Popken.
Otto II von Münchhausen transformed the castle grounds into one of continental Europe's first English landscape gardens, incorporating North American trees around 1750.
