St. Michael

St. Michael is a church built in the early 1200s in Andernach featuring Romanesque architecture constructed from local tuff stone. The building displays distinctive cloverleaf arcades on its lower level and blind arches above, creating a layered visual effect across its exterior.

Construction took place between 1210 and 1220 as a cemetery chapel for an Augustinian convent. It remained connected to the convent community for centuries, serving religious purposes within that monastic setting.

The church is named after the Archangel Michael, a protective figure in Christian tradition. This naming reflects its original purpose as a chapel meant to offer spiritual comfort to those who visited.

The best time to visit is during daylight hours when the stonework and architectural details are most visible. Visitors benefit from taking time to examine the fine arches and craftsmanship of the stone construction closely.

During renovation work in the 1850s, workers uncovered stacked coffins containing female remains in the church vaults. This discovery revealed that the chapel served as a burial place for convent members over many centuries.
