Krahnenberg-Kaserne, Military barracks in Andernach, Germany
Krahnenberg-Kaserne is a military barracks complex in Andernach comprising multiple structures built in the 1930s with architectural features typical of that period. The grounds include residential, administrative, and service facilities designed to support military operations.
The facility was built in the 1930s and initially served as an Air Force hospital until the end of World War II in 1945. After the war, American occupation forces used the buildings as a prisoner camp before French authorities converted the site into a medical facility.
On January 2, 1956, Chancellor Konrad Adenauer welcomed the first 550 Bundeswehr volunteers at this location, marking a new chapter in German military history.
The barracks grounds are accessible to visitors during opening hours, with morning or early afternoon being the best times to visit. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as the terrain is expansive and distances between various buildings are considerable.
A wooden barrack building from the founding period still stands on the grounds and is planned to be converted into a museum. This structure will house artifacts and exhibits relating to the early history of the German armed forces.
