Rugaard

The manor house extends across 965 hectares, incorporating 600 hectares of farmland, 350 hectares of forest, and 40 hectares of lakes near the eastern Djursland coast.

Construction of Rugaard began in 1579 when Hans Axelsen Arnfeldt obtained crown lands, marking the establishment of this Renaissance-style residence on Danish territory.

The estate includes 32 rental houses and five farms, maintaining traditional agricultural practices while adapting to modern land management requirements.

The property sits on elevated ground overlooking Nørresø lake, providing clear views toward the Kattegat sea and the surrounding agricultural landscape.

During the 17th century, the estate became known for conducting witch trials under owner Jørgen Arenfeldt, leading to subsequent legal reforms in Denmark.
