Bordj Bou Arréridj, Provincial capital in eastern Algeria
Bordj Bou Arréridj is a provincial capital in eastern Algeria situated at 928 meters elevation in the southern Kabylia Mountains. The city lies nestled between the Bibans range and Hodna mountains in a mountainous terrain.
The settlement began as a Turkish fort constructed during Ottoman times by forces from the Constantine beylik to maintain control over the Medjana region. This military installation marked the start of organized settlement in the area.
The El-Attik Mosque, built in 1894, holds deep meaning for residents as the city's first place of worship. It continues to serve as a spiritual and social gathering point for the community.
The city connects easily to surrounding areas through the N5 national highway and regular train services. The mountainous location means some streets are steep, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended for exploring on foot.
The city hosts over 200 manufacturing plants that make it a major center for electronics production across North Africa. This industrial concentration is surprising for a mountain city and shapes its contemporary economy.
