Tiaret, Provincial capital in northwestern Algeria

Tiaret is a city located in the Tell Atlas mountains at approximately 1200 meters elevation, roughly 150 kilometers from the Mediterranean coast. The settlement features markets, shops, and administrative buildings that serve as a regional hub for the surrounding mountainous area.

Between the 8th and 10th centuries, Abd al-Rahman ibn Rustam established this settlement as the capital of the Rustamid dynasty and made it an important learning center. The city gained considerable influence across the region during this period.

The name Tiaret comes from Berber language meaning lioness, reflecting the wild animals that once roamed the surrounding mountains. Local stories and museum displays today keep this heritage alive for visitors interested in the region's past.

The city sits on undulating terrain surrounded by mountains, so visitors should wear sturdy footwear and account for the elevation. The cooler months offer more comfortable conditions for exploring, as summers can become quite warm.

About 30 kilometers southwest of the city stand ancient stone monuments called Jedars, built between the 5th and 7th centuries. These mysterious burial structures are scattered across the landscape and offer insight into burial practices from that distant time.
