Îlot d'Arzew Lighthouse, lighthouse in Algeria
The Îlot d'Arzew Lighthouse is a lighthouse on a small rocky island near the coast of Arzew in Algeria. The simple stone structure with white walls stands about 12 meters tall and can be seen from far away, with its light flashing every 10 seconds to warn ships within a range of roughly 24 kilometers.
The lighthouse was built in 1865 during French control to improve navigation and protect ships from rocky shores nearby. Over the decades, technology improved from oil lamps to electric lights, and in 2017 a major restoration added modern solar panels to keep it functioning efficiently.
The island is reached by boat from Arzew, with a peaceful journey offering views of the coastline. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as there are no facilities or food options on the island.
The light flashes every 10 seconds with a primarily red color to warn sailors about underwater hazards and rocks. This specific rhythm and color choice make it recognizable for navigation purposes from a great distance.
