Museum of Modern Art of Oran, Art museum in Oran, Algeria
The Museum of Modern Art of Oran is a restored building with seven levels containing exhibition spaces, workshops, a library, and a terrace. The facility also includes a basement for artwork conservation, a cafeteria, retail shops, and areas for children's creative activities.
The building was originally constructed in 1922 as the Galeries de France department store and served commercial purposes for many decades. A major renovation in 2014 by architect Nadir Tazdait transformed it into the museum it is today.
The museum displays works by Algerian artists and hosts changing exhibitions throughout the year. Visitors can discover contemporary voices from the region and see how local creators work with different artistic styles.
The building has multiple floors, so it helps to check the orientation signs when you arrive to plan your route. Allow enough time to see the different sections and take a break on the terrace if you need to rest between gallery areas.
The museum received significant donations from Algerian artists starting in 2020, adding a considerable number of paintings to its collection. These gifts reflect growing support from the local art community for the institution.
