The General Engineering & Drydock Company in Oakland, California constructed HMS Walney, laying down the vessel on February 10, 1930.
The vessel received its name from Walney Island near Barrow-in-Furness, following the Royal Navy tradition of naming ships after geographical locations.
The ship accommodated 34 crew members, including 7 officers and 27 ratings, equipped with specialized training for naval and counter-measure operations.
During Operation Reservist in 1942, HMS Walney carried 200 US Armoured Infantry Division members and a US Naval contingent into Oran Harbour.
