Cathédrale du Sacré-Cœur d'Oran

The Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Oran is a former place of worship with Byzantine Revival features, prominent domes, and ornate arches built from reinforced concrete. The interior displays broad columned halls and decorative details that make it a notable architectural example in North Africa.

The structure was constructed between 1904 and 1913 under architect Albert Ballu and served as the seat of the Diocese of Oran until 1984. Its construction represented a turning point in the use of modern building materials in French North Africa.

The structure shows French colonial design with Byzantine and Roman elements visible in its arches and domes. This blend of architectural traditions reflects the European influence that shaped Oran during the early modern period.

The building is located at Place de la Kahina and now serves as a regional library with reading and research areas. Visitors can explore the spaces and view the architecture from inside when the facility is open to the public.

The building was one of the first structures built with reinforced concrete in French overseas territories. This construction technique, revolutionary for its time, made it possible to create the large domes and spacious interiors.
