La Calère, Former maritime district in Oran, Algeria
La Calère was a former maritime district in Oran that stretched across four hectares of coastal land, divided into upper and lower sections near the old port. The terrain dropped sharply toward the sea while rising gradually inland, creating an unusual mix of flat waterfront and higher ground.
The district developed under Spanish rule as a fishing settlement and was originally called Scalera before later becoming La Calère. It remained a thriving working quarter through much of the 20th century until structural damage and deteriorating conditions led to its eventual clearance.
The district was once a vital hub for fishers and laborers who worked directly on the water and shaped the city's daily rhythm. The area retained its working-class character as communities organized around maritime trade and the sea economy.
The site sits on active earthquake zones and has drainage challenges because of its closeness to the Mediterranean, requiring special construction standards. Visitors should keep in mind the area is no longer inhabited and they will encounter ruins and abandoned structures.
The terrain displays a sharp topography with an abrupt rise from sea level to about 110 meters, creating an extreme elevation change over a short distance. This dramatic landform made the district geographically and economically distinctive in Oran's history.
