Bullring of Oran

The bullring of Oran is a circular structure with tiered seating arranged around a central arena floor. Stone arches support the grandstands, creating a solid enclosed space that once hosted combat events.

The structure was first built in wood in 1890 at the request of Spanish settlers but was destroyed by fire and reconstructed in stone by 1908. This rebuilding in durable material transformed it into a permanent landmark.

The arena hosted performances by renowned matadors like El Cordobes and Ordinez Pepe until bullfighting events ceased during the Algerian War in 1960.

The building is open to visitors from Saturday through Thursday until 5 PM, with art exhibitions displayed beneath the supporting arches. Evening visits tend to be quieter than daytime tours, giving you more space to explore the seating areas.

This is the only bullring in Algeria and one of just two remaining in Africa, with the other located in Tangier, Morocco. This rarity makes it a notable survivor of Spanish influence that shaped the region during colonial times.
