Santa Cruz chapel, Religious chapel at Fort Santa Cruz in Oran, Algeria.
Santa Cruz Chapel is a Christian chapel set on the summit of the Murdjadjo hill, overlooking the city of Oran in Algeria, next to an old military fort. From up there, the view extends across the Mediterranean Sea and the port below.
The chapel was built in 1850 during a severe cholera epidemic that devastated Oran, as people sought a place of prayer and protection. It was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, to whom the community attributed the relief from the crisis.
Until 1962, believers gathered every year on Ascension Day to climb the mountain together and pray at the chapel. This procession was a fixed part of religious life in Oran and drew people from across the city.
The climb from the city is steep and calls for sturdy footwear and enough water, especially in summer. It is worth starting early in the morning or in the late afternoon to avoid the strongest heat of the day.
Inside the fortress complex next to the chapel, there is an underground water reservoir large enough to supply both the fort and the chapel during long periods of isolation from the city. This system shows how seriously the builders planned for the possibility of a prolonged siege.
