Abdelhamid Ben Badis Mosque, Modern mosque in Oran, Algeria.
The Abdelhamid Ben Badis Mosque is a large place of worship in Oran, Algeria, with two prayer halls and a minaret that rises about 104 meters. The building follows traditional Islamic architectural forms while using modern construction methods, making it one of the largest religious complexes in the city.
Work on the complex started in 2000, after the planned location had changed several times over the years. State backing eventually helped push the project through to completion.
The mosque is named after Abdelhamid Ben Badis, a scholar who led a movement to renew Islamic practice in Algeria during the early 20th century. His name gives the building a meaning that goes beyond prayer for many Algerian visitors.
Visiting outside of Friday prayers and religious celebrations will give you more space to move around the grounds. The complex has a large parking area, but it can fill up quickly on busy prayer days.
The minaret is one of the tallest in Algeria, and its height makes it visible from many different parts of Oran, well beyond the immediate neighborhood. Locals often use it as a natural point of reference when moving around the city.
