Thagaste, ancient city
Thagaste is an ancient Roman city in the area of modern Souk Ahras, in northeastern Algeria. The site still shows scattered remnants of stone walls, building foundations, and brick structures spread across open ground.
Thagaste grew into a trading center during the Roman period and remained inhabited for several centuries. After Roman power faded from North Africa, the city slowly declined and was eventually abandoned.
Thagaste is best known as the birthplace of Augustine of Hippo, one of the most widely read thinkers of early Christianity. The modern city of Souk Ahras keeps this memory alive, and locals take visible pride in the connection to such a historically significant figure.
The site sits in a remote area with little infrastructure nearby, so planning ahead is a good idea. Having your own vehicle or arranging a local guide before you arrive makes the visit much easier.
Augustine, born in Thagaste around 354 CE, left the city as a young man and later returned as a Christian before becoming bishop of Hippo Regius. His childhood years here are well documented in his own writings, making the site a starting point for anyone tracing his life.
