Villa Joly, Administrative building in Algiers, Algeria.
Villa Joly is an administrative building situated on the heights of Algiers, located across from the Summer Palace along Roosevelt Avenue. The modern structure overlooks the city and has housed important government functions since its construction.
Before Algerian independence, this building served as the residence of the director of finances for the general government of Algeria until 1962. It stands as a marker of the French administrative period in the city's strategic location.
The building takes its name from either Eugene Joly, the Swiss consul in Algiers, or his daughter Claire, who was an artist. The name connects the family story to the European presence in the city during that era.
The building now functions as the headquarters of the Bank of Algeria and is not generally open to the public for interior visits. You can still see the exterior and appreciate its location from the surrounding streets and Roosevelt Avenue.
On June 19, 1965, President Ahmed Ben Bella was arrested at this location during a military operation that redirected Algeria's political course. The event marked a decisive turning point in the young nation's development.
