Marsa Alam International Airport, airport in Egypt
Marsa Alam International Airport is an airport on the southern Egyptian Red Sea coast, handling mostly charter flights from Europe and the Middle East. It has a single terminal with check-in counters, security areas, and departure gates.
The airport was built in the early 2000s to open up the southern Red Sea coast to international tourism, which had previously been hard to reach by air. Before it opened, travelers had to fly into Hurghada or Luxor and continue by road.
The area around Marsa Alam is known among divers across Europe as one of the few stretches of the Egyptian coast where the reef is still in good condition. Inside the terminal, you often see travelers arriving with large bags and diving gear, ready to head straight to the water.
Most arriving passengers have transfers arranged in advance, as public transport options in the area are very limited. Anyone planning to get around independently should book a rental car before landing, since options at the airport itself are few.
Despite handling international flights, the airport sits in one of the most thinly inhabited stretches of the Egyptian coast, with almost no town nearby. Many passengers land, board a transfer, and reach a resort without ever passing through any urban area at all.
