Pyramid of Djoser, Step pyramid in Saqqara, Egypt.
The Pyramid of Djoser is a step pyramid in Saqqara in Giza Governorate, Egypt. Built from limestone, the structure reaches a height of 62 meters and consists of six clearly visible tiers stacked over a rectangular base.
The complex was built between 2670 and 2650 before the common era during the Third Dynasty. Royal architect Imhotep designed this first monumental stone structure in Egyptian architecture.
The name honors Pharaoh Djoser, while the six tiers symbolize the ruler's ascent to heaven. Visitors today see open courtyards and column remains that recall rituals for renewing royal authority.
The site opens its gates in the early morning when the temperature remains comfortable and light illuminates the tiers clearly. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as sandy paths and uneven surfaces can make access to different areas challenging.
Beneath the surface stretches an underground network of more than five kilometers in length. These passages and chambers once stored over 40,000 stone vessels while blue faience tiles decorated the walls and imitated woven mats.
