Pyramid of Teti

Pyramid of Teti, Ancient pyramid in Saqqara, Egypt

The Pyramid of Teti is a royal burial monument in Saqqara with a stone core and limestone casing that shows weathering on the exterior. Inside, corridors lead down to the burial chamber with a sarcophagus that visitors can still reach today.

The pyramid was built around 2345 BC as the burial place of King Teti, the first ruler of Egypt's Sixth Dynasty. It was among the first to incorporate religious texts into the burial chambers, setting a pattern for later tombs.

The interior walls contain ancient religious inscriptions that were meant to guide the soul in the afterlife. These texts reveal how deeply spiritual beliefs shaped royal burial practices of that era.

Visitors can enter the underground chambers and walk down the corridors, with the interior spaces in reasonable condition. Bringing a flashlight helps since lighting is limited and the passages are narrow in places.

Excavations uncovered a plaster mask that may show the king's face, with closed eyes and a partially opened mouth. This find is rare since so few royal portraits from this era survive.
