Pyramid of Merenre

Pyramid of Merenre, Egyptian pyramid in Saqqara, Egypt.

The Pyramid of Merenre is a limestone structure in Saqqara with smooth sides rising to 47 meters and a square base of approximately 78 meters. The four surfaces slope inward at a 53-degree angle, creating the typical form of a royal Egyptian pyramid.

The monument was built during the Sixth Dynasty around 2270 BC for Pharaoh Merenre Nemtyemsaf I. It stands approximately 450 meters southwest of the pyramid complex of Pharaoh Pepi I.

The burial chamber displays reliefs showing royal palace designs, while the ceiling above features stars and patterns related to the night sky.

The monument sits within the Saqqara archaeological area, which is open to visitors and contains several ancient structures spread across a large site. When visiting, allow enough time to explore and prepare for weather conditions, as the area offers limited shade.

The structure may house one of the oldest known royal mummies, discovered during archaeological exploration in the 1880s. This finding ranks among the most important discoveries made during the early excavations of the area.
