Pyramid of Userkaf, Ancient Egyptian royal tomb in Saqqara, Egypt.

The Pyramid of Userkaf is a royal tomb at Saqqara standing 49 meters (161 feet) tall with a base measuring 73.3 meters (240 feet) on each side. The structure contains underground burial chambers and corridors that connect to a temple complex on the surface.

Built around 2490 BCE for Pharaoh Userkaf, founder of the Fifth Dynasty, the pyramid represented a turning point in Egyptian royal burial design. It introduced architectural innovations that influenced how pharaohs planned their eternal resting places.

The carved reliefs in the temple complex show hunting scenes and daily court life, offering glimpses into how ancient Egyptians imagined the royal afterlife. These images were not merely decorative but served a spiritual purpose in the pharaoh's journey to the next world.

The complex is accessed through a northern entrance leading to interconnected underground passages that require careful navigation. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for dim lighting and confined spaces underground.

The offering chapel stands separate from the mortuary temple, making this the only pyramid complex in Egypt with this distinct arrangement. This unusual layout reveals how burial architecture was evolving during the Fifth Dynasty as designers experimented with new layouts.
