Pyramid of Djedkare-Isesi, Egyptian pyramid in South Saqqara, Egypt
The Pyramid of Djedkare-Isesi is a limestone structure in South Saqqara with a base of about 79 meters and an original height of about 52 meters, distinguished by smooth sides rather than stepped tiers. Inside, it contains a main burial chamber, an antechamber, and underground passages accessed through an entrance on the north side.
The pyramid was built during the Fifth Dynasty around 2400 BCE as the burial site for Pharaoh Djedkare-Isesi. It formed part of a large complex that included a neighboring queen pyramid with associated temple structures and offering halls.
The chamber walls inside bear religious inscriptions known as pyramid texts, which are among the oldest sacred writings of ancient Egypt and contain prayers and guidance for the afterlife.
Visiting this site requires proper preparation for the heat and rough terrain of Saqqara, where sturdy footwear and water are necessary. Arriving early in the day provides cooler temperatures and better lighting for exploring and taking photographs.
The adjacent queen pyramid in the Djedkare complex ranks among the largest from the entire Old Kingdom period. It had its own temples and religious spaces, reflecting the elevated status of this royal consort.
