Pyramid of Khendjer, Royal pyramid in Saqqara, Egypt

The Pyramid of Khendjer is a royal tomb in South Saqqara built from limestone blocks with a massive quartzite burial chamber at its core. The structure rises just one meter above the desert sand and sits among other ancient Egyptian monuments and burial buildings.

Construction took place during the 13th Dynasty around 1760 BCE, marking one of Egypt's last major pyramid projects. Archaeologist Gustave Jequier uncovered and studied the remains beginning in 1929.

The complex featured a mortuary temple on its eastern side, with both inner limestone and outer mudbrick walls creating distinct sacred spaces. This layout shaped how priests and mourners moved through the site during funeral rites.

The site is located in South Saqqara near Cairo and sits close to the ground, so wear comfortable shoes and prepare for strong desert sun. Arriving early in the day and bringing plenty of water will make your visit more comfortable.

The burial chamber features two enormous quartzite slabs covering a 150-ton monolithic stone, one of the most impressive chamber constructions found. Several additional chambers were prepared for queens, which was rare among other pyramids of this era.
