Lepsius XXIV, Smooth-sided pyramid in Abusir, Egypt

Lepsius XXIV is a smooth-sided pyramid in Abusir built from limestone that rises roughly 27 meters high with a base of about 31 meters on each side. The complex also includes an attached temple with characteristic architectural details from this period.

This pyramid dates from the Fifth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom and belongs to a group of royal burial structures in the Abusir region. The German archaeologist Karl Richard Lepsius catalogued it in the mid-19th century, establishing its scholarly documentation.

The complex displays typical features of royal burial architecture with a temple and false doors that visitors can still see today. These elements were central to the religious practices and ceremonies of ancient Egyptians.

The site lies roughly 25 kilometers south of Cairo and is most easily reached with organized guidance. Since the location sits in the desert, sturdy footwear and sun protection are recommended.

Archaeologists discovered alabaster vessels and copper tools in the burial chamber, offering clues about the everyday items royal households brought with them. These findings reveal the practical side of burial preparations beyond the monumental architecture.
