Buried Pyramid, Step pyramid in Saqqara, Egypt

The Buried Pyramid is an unfinished step-sided tomb at Saqqara that rises about 8 meters high with six limestone tiers stacked on top of each other. The structure reveals how ancient builders worked stone and organized the construction layers, offering a window into the techniques of its era.

This tomb was built during the Third Dynasty around 2640 BCE for Pharaoh Sekhemkhet and marks a turning point between simple flat-roofed tombs and monumental pyramid complexes. Its unfinished state tells us how construction projects were halted during this early phase of Egyptian architectural development.

The underground galleries and chambers beneath the pyramid surface demonstrate the Egyptian practices of creating extensive burial networks for royal ceremonies.

The site is located in the Saqqara necropolis and remains partially buried in sand, which allows direct viewing of ancient construction methods and work stages. Exploring the underground chambers requires careful walking and adequate lighting to appreciate the interior construction details.

The chambers beneath the surface still hold burial offerings and ceremonial objects discovered during archaeological work. These finds offer rare insight into ritual practices and daily life during this early period of pharaonic Egypt.
