Pelusium, Archaeological site in Port Said, Egypt
Pelusium is an ancient port city near Port Said whose ruins spread across a large area. Excavations have uncovered walls, watchtowers, houses, and administrative buildings that give a picture of daily life here.
The city was founded around 525 BCE and served as a military border fortress against invasions from the east. It remained an important trade hub for centuries until it was abandoned in the 7th century.
The name comes from the Greek word for mud, since the city developed on Nile flood deposits. Visitors can still see remains of baths and houses that show how people lived and worked here by the sea.
The ground is sandy and can be difficult to navigate after rain, so sturdy footwear is advisable. Access is possible from Port Said, and local guides help visitors understand the scattered remains.
A facility for making fish sauce was discovered here, with specialized containers and processing areas. The find shows that the city was an important production center for foods sold throughout the Mediterranean.
