Agouza, Administrative district in Giza, Egypt
Agouza is an administrative district in Giza that extends between 6th October Bridge and 15 May Bridge on the western bank of the Nile, south of the Imbaba neighborhood. The area consists of numerous residential cooperatives, educational facilities, and the British Council's main Egyptian center situated along the Nile Corniche.
The area transformed from a state agricultural estate into an urban district when the Ministry of Awqaf implemented development plans during the 1930s. This shift from rural to urban use reshaped the landscape and established the foundation for its current layout.
The Egyptian National Circus and Balloon Theater serve as central entertainment venues along the Agouza Corniche, offering performances throughout the year. These spaces shape the rhythm of daily life in the area and draw visitors from across the city.
The district is easily accessible by road via the two bridges spanning the Nile. Visitors will find a good mix of residential areas, schools, and cultural venues within walking distance of one another.
The name Agouza comes from either a coffee seller who worked along the Corniche or Nazly Hanem, who built a mosque in the area. This dual origin story remains part of local memory and discussion.
