Edfu South Pyramid, Step pyramid near Edfu, Egypt

Edfu South Pyramid is a step pyramid made of sandstone located in the desert near Edfu in southern Egypt. The monument measures approximately 18 meters on each side at its base and rises about 5 meters with three clearly visible stepped levels.

German archaeologists discovered and identified this structure as an ancient pyramid in the 1970s, leading to formal excavations in the decades that followed. Later studies compared the site with other provincial pyramids to better understand how pharaohs organized their realm.

This structure is part of a network of seven pyramids scattered across Egypt that demonstrate how pharaohs extended their religious authority beyond the main cities. Visitors can observe how these smaller monuments relate to the landscape and understand their role in the spiritual organization of the kingdom.

The structure sits about 5 kilometers south of Edfu and is accessible via a desert road that comes very close to the site. Visitors should prepare for dry and hot conditions and bring suitable clothing and plenty of water.

The entire structure was built from grey, blue, and reddish sandstone blocks joined with clay and sand, with no internal chambers or burial spaces inside. This solid construction approach differs from later pyramids and reveals early techniques of monumental building.
