Open air Sculpture Museum, Open air sculpture museum in Alcalá de Henares, Spain
The Open Air Sculpture Museum in Alcalá de Henares is a permanent outdoor exhibition with around 58 contemporary sculptures spread across a two-kilometer walking path. The route runs from Complutense Avenue toward the historic city walls, with pieces positioned at various intervals along the sides.
Sculptor José Noja initiated the museum's creation in the early 1990s, leading to its official opening in August 1993. Since then, the project became a permanent installation that anchored contemporary artworks into the urban landscape.
The collection displays works by Spanish, European, and American artists positioned at different points along the path, representing various artistic directions and approaches. This mix allows visitors to see how contemporary art traditions relate to each other in outdoor spaces.
The museum is free and accessible year-round without entrance fees, allowing visitors to explore the works at their own pace. Comfortable shoes are recommended for the walk, as the route covers about two kilometers of ground.
The museum hosts one of Europe's longest open-air sculpture exhibitions, integrating seamlessly into the cityscape and architectural heritage. This placement allows artworks to emerge in locations where visitors might not typically expect to find them.
