Pitón Volcánico de Cancarix, Natural monument in Hellin, Spain

Pitón Volcánico de Cancarix is a natural monument in the Sierra de las Cabras mountain range in Albacete Province, rising 707 meters above sea level. The exposed volcanic pipe displays rare ultrapotassic rocks that give the site its geological significance.

This volcanic formation developed approximately 7 million years ago during the Upper Miocene period. Natural erosion gradually revealed its internal structure, exposing the geological composition that scientists study today.

The site takes its name from a rare rock type first identified here, drawing geologists from around the world to study its unusual composition. For researchers, this volcanic spot represents a crucial natural laboratory for understanding rare mineral formations.

Visitors can follow two marked trails around the volcano, with the shorter route covering about 700 meters and the longer path extending approximately 4 kilometers through volcanic terrain. Sturdy footwear and water are essential, as the ground is rocky and exposed to the elements.

The site contains a specific type of lamproite rock named after the location, representing one of the few exposed volcanic pipes visible in the Iberian Peninsula. This makes it a remarkable spot for studying volcanic activity from millions of years ago.
