ABC Serrano, Historical building and commercial center in Salamanca district, Madrid, Spain.
ABC Serrano is a listed building in the Salamanca district of Madrid, made up of two connected structures built in the Neo-Mudéjar and Neo-Plateresque styles. Its facades are covered in detailed ceramic work that draws on Moorish and Andalusian decorative traditions.
The building was constructed in 1899 as the headquarters of Blanco y Negro magazine, and it later became the home of the ABC newspaper. Toward the end of the 1980s it was converted into a shopping center, keeping much of its original structure intact.
The building takes its name from the ABC newspaper that once operated here, and that connection is still felt in the way the space is used today. Temporary exhibitions and cultural events are held regularly on the upper floors, drawing visitors who come for more than just shopping.
The building can be entered from Calle Serrano on one side and from Paseo de la Castellana on the other, so it works well as a shortcut between the two streets. Weekday visits tend to be much calmer than weekend ones, especially during morning hours.
The central covered courtyard that visitors walk through today was originally an open printing yard where the magazine's presses operated. When the conversion took place in the late 1980s, this space was roofed over and became the heart of the shopping center, though its industrial past is rarely mentioned.
