Palau del Marqués de la Scala, Gothic palace in Plaza de Manises, Valencia, Spain
Palau del Marqués de la Scala is a Gothic palace on Plaza de Manises made up of two interconnected residential sections with shared features. The building rises four levels, including a semi-basement, mezzanine, main floor, and gallery level, all organized around its distinctive portal entrances.
The building was constructed in the 16th century as a residence for the Marquises of L'Escala and underwent major transformations afterward. Over two subsequent centuries, Renaissance and Baroque styles were gradually incorporated, adding layers to the original Gothic design.
The palace takes its name from its original noble residents and displays the grandeur that wealthy families of Valencia sought to demonstrate. The interior spaces and courtyards reflect how the Valencian nobility lived and conducted their affairs.
The building sits at Plaza de Manises 3 and functions as the headquarters of the Provincial Council of Valencia today. Since it operates as an administrative building, visitors should plan their visit during regular office hours when access may be available.
Two distinct courtyards exist inside, each reflecting different construction periods of the building. The older courtyard showcases Gothic details while the newer section reveals Baroque features.
