Statue-menhir de Tavera, Prehistoric stone statue in Tavera, France

The Statue-menhir of Tavera is a prehistoric granite stone sculpture that displays human-like features including prominent ears, a rounded face, and visible facial characteristics. The surface shows finely carved details representing anatomical elements such as eyes, mouth, and spine.

The stone monument originates from the 2nd millennium BCE and lay hidden in the earth for centuries. It was discovered in 1961 positioned face down on a mountain pass slope.

The figure displays ancient craftsmanship through carved eyes, ears, and other details carefully worked into the stone. This representation offers insight into the artistic traditions of the early people who lived in this region.

You can reach the sculpture via a marked walking trail from the parking area beside the RT20 road. The round trip takes about one hour and requires sturdy footwear suitable for uneven terrain.

The artwork shows traces of its original carving process and preserves a representation of a necklace as an engraved arc between the shoulders. These details offer a rare glimpse into the crafting methods of that distant era.
