Lacs des Chéserys, Glacial lakes in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France.
Lacs des Chéserys are two mountain lakes sitting at 2150 meters in the Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve, surrounded by rocky terrain and steep slopes. The water appears deep blue and reflects the peaks around it, with alpine meadows visible on the lower slopes nearby.
These lakes were carved by glaciers during the last ice age, which hollowed out deep basins in the rock beneath them. This glacial action shaped the entire Chamonix valley and created the conditions for these high-altitude bodies of water.
These waters hold special meaning for hikers and mountain lovers who visit to experience the quiet of the high Alps and feel connected to the landscape. The lakes serve as places where people pause and take in the raw beauty of the surroundings without distraction.
The lakes are best reached from May through October when snow and ice have cleared and trails are safe to walk. The main route starts from Argentière and takes several hours, so start early and wear proper hiking boots for the rocky terrain.
On calm days the water becomes so clear and still that mountain peaks reflect perfectly, making it hard to tell where the real peaks end and their reflections begin. This mirror-like quality draws photographers and artists who come specifically to capture this remarkable phenomenon.
