Aiguilles Rouges National Nature Reserve, Nature reserve in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc and Vallorcine, France.
Aiguilles Rouges National Nature Reserve is a protected area in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc and Vallorcine with alpine terrain and mountain landscapes. The area includes several mountain lakes such as Lac Blanc, Lac Noir, Lac Cornu, and Lac du Brévent, spanning across slopes with varying elevations.
The area started as a small reserve near Argentière in the 1960s and expanded to become an intercommunal reserve in 1971. In 1974 it gained national nature reserve status, establishing its current protected designation.
The information center at Col des Montets presents exhibits about alpine ecosystems and their characteristics. Visitors can learn how plants and animals adapt to the harsh mountain environment across different elevations.
A hiking trail connects various sections and leads to higher points with good views of the surroundings. The information center operates from June through mid-September and provides the best access to details about the terrain.
The area is home to Alpine ibex, chamois, rock ptarmigan, and golden eagles that form a complete food chain across different elevations. These animal populations demonstrate the successful recovery of species that were once rare in the Alps.
